Saturday, October 18, 2008 9 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Worcester Crowne Plaza LWVMA Fall Conference: Finding the Common Wealth. We will be hearing from Lt. Governor Timothy Murray, Senator Stephen Brewer and Worcester Mayor Konstantina Lukes during our morning sessions. Our Luncheon speaker, Peter Meade, Managing Director of Rasky Baerlein, will talk about Question 1 and our communities. The LWVMA will also thank Senator Edward Augustus for his election reform advocacy and his good work in the Massachusetts legislature.

Membership and Training will hold a workshop on Membership Recruitment as part of the Membership Initiative Program. Afternoon workshops include Ballot Question 1, Healthcare for All, Consensus Discussion Leader & Recorder Training, League Moderator Training, and Effective League Lobbying. Asian Longhorned Beetle Talk by Peter Alsop. Peter Alsop, a PA alumnus, has been investigating the Asian Longhorned Beetle outbreak in Worcester for the past few months, and wrote an article on the outbreak that will be published shortly in the Smithsonian Magazine. This insect has the potential to decimate our hardwood forests. Other outbreaks have been quarantined in Illinois, New Jersey and New York, as well as in isolated warehouses in several additional states. The talk is free and open to the public.

Brown will spotlight Black Lucy, a freed slave who lived in Ballardvale; Adelaide Bullen, the archaeologist and Phillips Academy resident who excavated Black Lucy's Garden; and Eartha Dengler, founder of the Immigrant City Archives (now Lawrence History Center). Members have the opportunity to bring a donation of canned goods for local food banks.
